Commanders Kickoff Kicking Competition in OTAs

The Washington Commanders have officially initiated a competitive environment for their kickers. During the recent organized team activities (OTAs), the team provided reporters with a glimpse of their training, showcasing several new additions, including rookie kicker Drew Stevens.

While undrafted rookie kickers typically don’t garner much attention in the NFL, the situation in Washington is quite different. The Commanders have struggled with stability at the kicker position in recent years. Last season, they invested significantly in former Pro Bowl kicker Matt Gay, who ultimately was released after missing six field goals over ten games. Additionally, veteran Matthew Wright filled in for Gay during an injury absence last season.

Following Gay's departure, the Commanders signed Jake Moody, a third-round draft choice from San Francisco who had been with the Chicago Bears' practice squad. Moody had previously made headlines after kicking a game-winning field goal against the Commanders during a Monday Night Football match. He impressed Washington during his audition, converting ten of eleven field goals, including a notable 56-yarder, and was re-signed for another year in March.

After the 2026 NFL Draft, the Commanders sought to enhance the competition by adding Stevens, a standout kicker from the University of Iowa with four All-Big Ten selections. At the recent OTAs, both kickers had the chance to showcase their skills. Stevens excelled, successfully converting all five of his attempts, including a long 53-yarder. Meanwhile, Moody had a solid performance, making five of six attempts, though he did miss one.

The competition between Stevens and Moody promises to be exciting, as both kickers have demonstrated their potential. As they continue to vie for the starting position, the decision may not be finalized until the last preseason game. With Stevens showing impressive power and Moody displaying reliability, the battle for the kicker spot is one to watch closely.
