Commanders' Trey Amos is a 2026 breakout candidate

With NFL rosters solidifying, we're getting a much clearer idea of what to expect from each team in 2026. Not just who the new faces on the roster are, but how they will be used. The Washington Commanders didn't just add a significant number of players to the roster; they added players who will be impactful.

But what about the players who were already there? Many of them were already impactful and will continue to perform at a high level. Will any of the Commanders' players have a breakout year in 2026? Pro Football Focus thinks so. Cornerback Trey Amos landed on PFF's 2026 All-Breakout team.

There were a slew of names worthy of this second spot on the team, but Amos is just a hair above the rest.

Last year’s second-round selection didn’t enjoy the kind of rookie showcase he desired, concluding with a 55.8 overall PFF grade with a 58.8 PFF coverage mark. While Amos was certainly victimized at times, he reflected his talent by earning at least a 68.5 coverage grade in five of his 10 contests, and his 51.43% lockdown rate was 26th among all cornerbacks. Further, Amos broke up an eye-catching 17.6% of his targets.

Washington’s defense should be considerably better at all three levels in 2026 after the team’s offseason overhaul. With new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones specializing in the secondary, that marks another boost for Amos.

Forget the PFF grades for a second, Amos recorded 32 tackles (19 solo), six passes defensed, and one stuff in his 10 games, including eight starts. He was often Washington's best cornerback when he was on the field last season, until a broken fibula in Week 10 ended his rookie year.

Amos will get a boost to his game under Daronte Jones, and he'll see more time on the field with Lattimore and Igbinoghe both gone, which will give him ample opportunity to have a breakout season. The Commanders did bring in new faces in the secondary, including Amik Robertson and Ahkello Witherspoon, and re-signed Antonio Hamilton Sr., but the starting job lining up opposite Mike Sainristil belongs to Amos. Robertson is expected to start in the slot, but can also play outside.
