Craig Breslow Discusses Red Sox's Remarkable Offensive Revival
Just a fortnight ago, the Boston Red Sox were struggling offensively. By May 18, the team had managed to score an average of only 3.62 runs per game across their first 47 outings, placing them near the bottom of the league in several key offensive metrics. They ranked 29th in both runs and home runs, 29th in slugging percentage, 27th in wOBA, and last in wRC+. Notably, they endured a disheartening streak in May, going nine consecutive games with three runs or fewer—their longest such stretch since 2012.
However, in the latter part of May, the Red Sox appeared to find their offensive groove. The last two weeks have marked the team's best offensive performances of the season in terms of wRC+, reflecting a significant turnaround.
In a pre-game interview with NESN's Tom Caron ahead of Tuesday's matchup against the Baltimore Orioles, Craig Breslow shed light on the reasons behind this unexpected revival. "I think guys are starting to settle in, to understanding their roles, the way they can contribute, to being themselves," Breslow noted, emphasizing the players' growing comfort and confidence.
Several key players, including Jarren Duran and Caleb Durbin, have begun to find their rhythm after slow starts, while bench contributions from Mickey Gasper, Nick Sogard, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa have further bolstered the lineup. As a result, the Red Sox have significantly deepened their batting order, averaging 5.55 runs per game over the final 11 contests of May.
Looking ahead, Boston will need to maintain this momentum throughout June to navigate a challenging schedule and improve their standings in the league.
