Cubs Minor League Update: Matthew Boyd's Rehab Performance Highlights Action

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - On May 3, 2026, Matthew Boyd took the mound for the Iowa Cubs as part of his rehabilitation assignment. The game, however, ended in disappointment for Iowa, who fell to the Indianapolis Pirates, 8-1.

Boyd's performance was more promising than his final stats suggested. He pitched over four innings, yielding three runs—two of which were earned—on four hits. The left-hander exited the game after reaching a 60-pitch limit, with two runs scoring after he allowed a couple of singles to start the fifth. Boyd recorded two strikeouts and issued one walk during his outing.

Offensively, Iowa struggled, managing only four hits throughout the game. Brett Bateman was a bright spot, doubling in shortstop Ben Cowles in the eighth inning for the team's sole run. Bateman finished the game with a 1-for-3 line that included a walk, while Cowles contributed with a 1-for-4 performance.

In other minor league action, the Knoxville Smokies claimed a 4-2 victory against the Chattanooga Lookouts, bringing them within half a game of the first-place spot in the Southern League North Division. Brooks Caple delivered an impressive five-inning start, allowing one run and striking out seven batters. Jace Beck followed with two hitless innings for the win, while Vince Reilly earned a save despite giving up a home run in the eighth.

The South Bend Cubs triumphed over the Ft. Wayne TinCaps, 7-5, with Miguel Useche leading the charge by going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Will Sanders, also on a rehab assignment, pitched 4.2 innings and allowed three runs, but only one was earned. In contrast, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans faced a tough loss against the Wilson Warbirds, finishing 10-1, despite Pierce Coppola's solid start.

The Cubs' minor league affiliates continue to work through their seasons, showcasing both established players and those working to return from injuries.
