Cubs Triumph Over Cardinals as Pete Crow-Armstrong Shines with Four Hits
ST. LOUIS (AP) — In a standout performance, Pete Crow-Armstrong recorded four hits, including a home run, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 6-1 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night. Crow-Armstrong's seventh homer of the season came in the eighth inning, adding to an impressive night that also featured a double and two runs scored, both driven in by teammate Michael Busch.
Ben Brown took the mound for the Cubs, delivering a strong outing with only three hits allowed over seven innings. Nico Hoerner contributed with an RBI single in the sixth, while Ian Happ capitalized on a wild pitch in the eighth. The Cubs amassed a total of 12 hits, marking their third win in four games.
Ryan Fernandez, who came in to relieve starter Kyle Leahy, faced some challenges, surrendering two unearned runs and issuing two walks. He struggled with a wild pitch to Alex Bregman in the fourth, aiding Busch's advancement to second base. A throwing error in the sixth allowed Miguel Amaya to reach base, and after a walk to Dansby Swanson, Fernandez was replaced by Justin Bruihl, who subsequently hit Crow-Armstrong with a pitch to load the bases. Hoerner's single and Busch's sacrifice fly increased the Cubs' lead to 3-1.
The Cardinals struck first when Alec Burleson hit an RBI single in the third inning. Despite Burleson collecting another hit in the ninth, a throw from outfielder Seiya Suzuki resulted in Iván Herrera being tagged out at third base. Crow-Armstrong capped off the game with an impressive diving catch for the final out in left center field.
The series finale will see LHP Jordan Wicks (0-1, 16.62 ERA) make his second start of the season for the Cubs, while LHP Matthew Liberatore (2-3, 4.76) will take the mound for the Cardinals.
