Curacao's Coach Advocaat Calls for Realism Amid World Cup Aspirations
Curacao's head coach Dick Advocaat expressed immense pride in the joy his team has brought to the Caribbean nation, but he also urged fans to maintain realistic expectations ahead of their match against Ecuador. The team, currently ranked 83rd in the FIFA standings, suffered a heavy defeat, losing 7-1 to Germany in their opening Group E encounter in Houston, making their path to the knockout stages quite challenging.
As Curacao prepares to face an Ecuadorian squad that finished second to Argentina in the South American qualifiers and holds a ranking 54 spots above them, Advocaat emphasized the significance of their participation in this prestigious tournament. "When you still see the joy of those people, that is unprecedented and not everyone has realized that yet," said the 78-year-old Dutch coach. He noted that this experience will be unforgettable for many on the island, adding, "Let's be proud that we made it. And let's try, as a team, to show up a bit better than we did against Germany."
Despite the excitement surrounding Curacao's World Cup journey, Advocaat reminded supporters of the harsh realities of competing against stronger teams. "We want it very badly, but you're playing against teams of higher quality than yourselves," he remarked. He acknowledged the need for his players to work harder and play more cohesively to make an impact in this highly competitive group.
Returning to lead Curacao after briefly stepping down in February due to family health concerns, Advocaat reflected on the significant changes in the team’s infrastructure since he first took charge in 2024. "So much has changed to the benefit of the island, to the benefit of the squad," he said, highlighting the progress made in resources and opportunities for the players.
Curacao's next challenge will be against Ecuador on Saturday, with a final group match against Ivory Coast scheduled for June 25. Advocaat concluded, "They end up in stadiums they normally drive past. Now they get to play there -- a wonderful experience."
