Dalton Knecht Hosts First Basketball Camp in Knoxville, Celebrating Community Connections

Excitement filled Pratt Pavilion as approximately 150 enthusiastic young fans chanted "Dalton! Dalton!" while eagerly awaiting the arrival of Dalton Knecht, the second-year NBA player who gained fame during his one season with Tennessee basketball. When Knecht made his entrance, the crowd erupted in cheers. "This is really special to me," he expressed. "to have my first camp, especially in Knoxville. You all gave so much to me. The biggest thing today is to have fun."

On June 13, Knecht launched the inaugural Dalton Knecht Basketball Camp, which he plans to make an annual tradition in the city that helped him rise to prominence. He emphasized that the focus of the day was on the participants, firmly stating he would not discuss his NBA career or his role with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Originally from Thornton, Colorado, Knecht played two seasons at Northeastern Junior College before transferring to Northern Colorado, ultimately landing in Knoxville for the 2023-24 season. He reflected on the community's warm reception, saying, "Just the love they gave me while I was here... The city came to love me."

During his remarkable season with the Vols, Knecht averaged 21.7 points per game, leading the SEC with an impressive 25.5 points per game, the highest scoring average in the league in 14 years. His performance earned him multiple accolades, including the unanimous SEC Player of the Year and SEC Newcomer of the Year titles, before being drafted 17th overall by the Lakers in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Knecht felt a strong sense of gratitude toward the community, stating, "They gave me a home to always come back to." He actively participated in the camp alongside the young athletes, engaging in layup lines and drills, which thrilled the attendees who got to interact with an NBA player. "The most fun part was when we got to compete and make new friends," said participant Hayden, 11.

Sean Green and Jamal Richardson, who organized the camp, emphasized the importance of hard work in sports. "Hard work is the foundation," Richardson noted, highlighting the value of persevering through challenges. Despite initial space limitations, the camp sold out quickly, reflecting Knecht's popularity in Knoxville. The event concluded with an awards ceremony and autograph session, where Knecht took the time to connect with each participant, embodying the role model he aspires to be.
