Dave Portnoy points out Kenny Atkinson’s ‘disaster class’ and urged Cleveland Cavaliers to ‘fire’ 2025 COTY
Dave Portnoy has never needed an invitation to turn a playoff failure into a blunt verdict, and Kenny Atkinson has now felt the force of it.
Portnoy reacted on X after the Cleveland Cavaliers were swept by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals, putting Atkinson at the centre of the fallout.
Portnoy’s frustration was one thing. Calling for Atkinson’s job was another. The sweep demands criticism, but it does not automatically justify a dismissal.
Dave Portnoy calls out Kenny Atkinson after Cavaliers sweep
The reaction was always bound to be harsh. Cleveland did not just lose. Their Game 4 defeat ended the series in emphatic fashion and gave critics a clean target.
Atkinson is the head coach, so part of the responsibility sits with him. Playoff basketball exposes slow adjustments, weak counters and poor rhythm more brutally than the regular season.
That is why Portnoy’s reaction lands as a fan verdict. Cleveland looked short of answers, and Atkinson cannot be separated from that.
Kenny Atkinson deserves criticism, but firing him would be extreme
The problem is that scrutiny and dismissal are not the same thing. Atkinson was named 2025 NBA Coach of the Year after Cleveland went 64-18 and finished first in the Eastern Conference.
That matters. It does not erase the sweep, but it proves this is not a failed coaching project. It is a strong team with a postseason problem.
Atkinson has also expressed confidence in himself and the group, which is the stance Cleveland should want before a difficult summer review.
The Cavaliers should challenge him on rotations, late-game control and series adjustments. They should not let one brutal sweep outweigh the wider body of work unless internal evidence points somewhere far darker.
Portnoy’s anger makes sense as reaction. As a basketball decision, firing Atkinson now would be extreme.
