Detroit Forward Makes History with Five Goals Against Sporting Jax

In a stunning display of skill, Detroit City FC's Darren Smith matched the USL Championship record by scoring five goals in a single match, leading his team to a 6-2 victory over Sporting Club Jacksonville on June 13 at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida.

Smith's scoring spree began in the 13th minute when he capitalized on a rebound from Sporting Jax goalkeeper Christian Olivares. He added another goal in the 26th minute by rounding the keeper for an easy finish, followed by a remarkable volley during first-half stoppage time. After halftime, he struck again in the 57th minute following a turnover, and finally sealed his record-setting performance in the 81st minute by punishing another defensive mistake.

The previous record for most goals in a USL match was held by Mauricio Salles of VSI Tampa Bay, who scored five times against Antigua Barracuda on June 8, 2013, when the league was classified as third division. Smith's achievement comes during the current second-division season, underscoring the significance of his performance.

Sporting Jax, still struggling for form, remains winless in their last 15 encounters against second-division teams, including two losses in the USL Cup. With a goal differential of minus-19, they sit at the bottom of the league. Emil Jaaskelainen briefly put Sporting Jax ahead with a header in the ninth minute, and later assisted Kieran Sadlier for another goal, but it wasn't enough to change the outcome. Kobe Hernandez-Foster added a late free kick for Detroit City, who now finds themselves in second place in the Eastern Conference.

Currently, Smith leads the league with 11 goals, six of which have come against Sporting Jax. The match was delayed due to thunderstorms, pushing the kickoff to 9:10 p.m. Sporting Jax will look to rebound on Saturday, June 20, when they host the Charleston Battery at 7 p.m.
