Diamondbacks Activate Gurriel, Option Waldschmidt to Triple-A

The Arizona Diamondbacks are set to bring back outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. from the injured list as of Monday, June 15. To facilitate his return, outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt will be sent down to Triple-A Reno.

Gurriel has been sidelined since May 23 due to a left hamstring strain. Prior to his injury, he posted a batting line of .228/.284/.304, including one home run over 92 at-bats. Meanwhile, Waldschmidt, regarded as the team's top prospect, has seen a decline in his performance, registering a .259/.314/.357 line with no home runs across 112 at-bats. His recent struggles are evident, as he has only managed to hit 11 for 61 (.180) in his last 17 games, resulting in a .493 OPS.

In a related decision, the Diamondbacks have opted to retain rookie outfielder Tommy Troy on the roster. Troy hit a home run during Sunday’s game against the Reds and holds a batting average of .228/.323/.368 in 57 at-bats. Additionally, Jorge Barrosa, a strong defensive outfielder, remains with the team despite facing challenges at the plate. Barrosa is out of minor league options, meaning he would need to clear waivers if sent down.
