Diamondbacks' New Signing Impresses in Batting Practice
In an impressive display at Chase Field, Jun-Sang Eom, the newly signed Korean player, sent several baseballs soaring into the stands, with one even hitting the batter’s eye and another clearing the center field overhang. A Diamondbacks scout observing the scene quipped about Eom’s power, saying, “I’m thinking I’m light right now after watching this.”
The 18-year-old outfielder officially joined the Diamondbacks on June 16, following an agreement that reportedly includes a $1.5 million signing bonus. After signing, Eom participated in batting practice alongside established major league players and also worked on fielding ground balls with shortstop Geraldo Perdomo.
Although the team has labeled him as a “two-way prospect,” their intentions appear to focus primarily on his batting abilities, with hopes that he can secure a position in the infield, potentially at shortstop. Eom was considered among the elite amateur talents in South Korea and would have likely been a top draft pick in the upcoming KBO draft had he not chosen to join the Diamondbacks.
Standing at 6 feet 1 inch and weighing 205 pounds, Eom showcased his robust build and hitting prowess during practice, making his performance one of the most notable for a player of his age in recent memory.
In tonight's matchup, the Diamondbacks will face off against the Angels at 6:40 p.m., featuring Merrill Kelly on the mound for Arizona against Reid Detmers for Los Angeles. Kelly has had a mixed season, while Detmers is coming off an impressive start against the Astros.
