“Disgusting & Over-The-Top Behavior”;”Umpire Got His Feelings Hurt” – Fans React After Epic Bat Flip Moment in Kansas Baseball Vs Baylor
The Kansas Jayhawks moved on to the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament in Surprise, AZ, after a thrilling 8-7 victory in extra innings against the Baylor Bears on Thursday. Although the game was closely contested until the very end, it was the Jayhawks who secured the win with a walk-off hit in the tenth inning.
Some fans criticized a moment during the quarterfinal involving Jayhawks hitter Augusto Mungarrieta, who hit a leadoff home run in the second inning, giving the team a 2-0 lead. As he rounded the bases, he only flipped his bat near first base, drawing the umpires’ attention and displeasure from the Bears’ dugout. The umpire quickly intervened to prevent escalation.
“Completely disgusting and over-the-top behavior by the Kansas dugout. Good on the home plate umpire to keep things in line,” one fan commented.
“People like watching college baseball bc of the excitement and celebrations. Not the best look, but its part of the college baseball culture now,” another fan commented.
“Wasn’t the dugout it was the late and completely egregious bat flip that drew his attention. Lucky he didn’t get ejected,” yet another fan commented.
Some other fans found no issues with the bat flip and instead sided with the Jayhawks’ catcher’s home run celebration, calling it legit.
“Umpire got his feelings hurt on that bat flip,” one fan commented.
“I’ll never understand the bat flip ordeal. Dude just hit a tank, carry the bat around all the bases if you’d like. Seems so strange that it bothers people HOW FAR he carried the bat. Like, the ball is gone, seems like you’d just go compete harder if it bothered you. Wild,” another fan commented.
“If you don’t want him to flip the bat like that.. try not to let him hit the ball into the parking lot.. quit whining,” yet another fan commented.
Kansas to Take on Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Tournament Semifinal
The Jayhawks will face the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Big 12 tournament semifinals in Surprise, AZ on Friday night. Coming off their first-ever Big 12 regular-season title this year, they aim to secure only their second tournament championship in history, the first being in 2006.
The last two quarterfinal matchups will feature Kansas State versus West Virginia and Cincinnati against Arizona State.
Given that the Jayhawks have achieved solid results against all these teams during the regular season, it will be intriguing to observe their strategy against the team that advances to the final this weekend, especially if the Hawks beat the Cowboys in tomorrow’s semifinals to reach the final themselves.
