Dodgers Eye Aroldis Chapman as Trade Deadline Approaches

The Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly considering a familiar name to bolster their bullpen as they strive for a third consecutive championship: Aroldis Chapman. The veteran reliever, known for his exceptional closing abilities, has maintained impressive velocity even in his late 30s and is seen as a valuable addition as the trade deadline nears.

Chapman, who currently plays for the struggling Boston Red Sox, is in the final year of his contract, which includes a vesting option for 2027. With the Red Sox facing challenges, he is expected to be available for trade if the right offer comes along. ESPN's Jeff Passan has indicated a 90% likelihood that Chapman will be moved, with the Dodgers emerging as one of the top potential destinations. “Relief pitchers often are some of the most impactful deadline acquisitions, and Boston’s closer is as effective as ever,” Passan noted, highlighting Chapman’s continued effectiveness despite a slight decline in his fastball speed.

The Dodgers’ relief corps has struggled recently, dropping from elite status to merely solid. While closer Edwin Diaz is anticipated to return after the All-Star break, his performance remains uncertain. Currently, only Tanner Scott, Will Klein, and Alex Vesia have proven to be reliable, while others like Kyle Hurt and Blake Treinen have been inconsistent. A bullpen featuring Scott, Diaz, and Chapman could significantly enhance the Dodgers’ postseason prospects.

Chapman has a complex history with the Dodgers. In 2015, Los Angeles almost acquired him from the Cincinnati Reds but backed out after serious allegations surfaced involving domestic violence. Although the case was not prosecuted, Chapman faced a 30-game suspension from MLB. The Dodgers attempted to sign him in 2016, but he opted for the East Coast instead. Now, years later, the opportunity to secure Chapman could provide a substantial boost to the Dodgers' championship aspirations, especially as he continues to deliver impressive performances on the mound.
