Donald Trump is considering attending the 2026 NBA Finals after the New York Knicks ended their long wait to return to the championship stage.

The idea carries more weight than a normal celebrity courtside appearance. A sitting president at an NBA Finals game would be rare, and Madison Square Garden is already the center of New York sports again.

Trump’s interest also fits his long connection to the city and the team. The twist is that he had already been looking at a Knicks appearance before the Finals were even secured.

Donald Trump could attend the New York Knicks’ NBA Finals return at Madison Square Garden

According to a New York Times report, Trump is weighing a trip to the Finals after the Knicks reached the championship round.

“President Trump is considering making an appearance at the NBA finals next week, a rarity for an American leader, after his hometown New York Knicks clinched a championship spot, according to three people familiar with the matter,” the NY Times reported.

The Knicks created the opening by sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals, completing a run that sent them to their first Finals since 1999.

Reports have pointed to Game 3 or Game 4 at Madison Square Garden as possible targets if Trump follows through. That would make the moment bigger than Knicks nostalgia. It would bring presidential security, political attention and a national spotlight into an arena already loaded with Finals pressure.

Donald Trump had a New York Knicks surprise planned before the NBA Finals became real

The same report also revealed that Trump’s Knicks plans were already active before New York finished the Cleveland series.

“If the Knicks had lost Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals on Monday, Mr. Trump had planned to make a surprise appearance among the team’s faithful at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, according to three people familiar with the planning,” the NY Times added.

That plan disappeared once the Knicks won Game 4 in Cleveland and removed the need for a Game 5 at the Garden. Instead, the possible appearance shifted to the Finals, where the stakes and attention would be even higher.

Trump has publicly embraced the Knicks’ run and has a long history around New York sports, including a connection with owner James Dolan.

For the Knicks, the story is simple on the court: they are back in the Finals after 27 years. For Trump, the stance is now clear enough to see: he is considering turning that return into one of the most unusual presidential sports appearances in NBA history.
