Dougie Hamilton Emerges as Potential Trade Target This Offseason

Dougie Hamilton, a former defenseman for the Boston Bruins, may be headed for a trade this offseason. Hamilton, who was selected by Boston as the ninth overall pick in the 2011 NHL Draft—acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Phil Kessel deal—has had a notable career since leaving the Bruins.

After spending three seasons in Boston, Hamilton was traded to the Calgary Flames in exchange for a first-round pick and two second-round picks in the 2015 draft. Following his tenure in Calgary, he played for the Carolina Hurricanes before signing a lucrative seven-year contract worth $63 million with the New Jersey Devils.

Despite having two years remaining on his current deal, NHL insider Nick Kypreos from Sportsnet has identified Hamilton as a candidate for a trade this offseason. "The Devils are another team that will be wrestling some with the salary cap," Kypreos stated. He pointed out that with players like Arseny Gritsyuk and Simon Nemec becoming restricted free agents, the team will face challenges in managing their salary cap space. Kypreos noted that finding a buyer for Hamilton's $9 million cap hit could be difficult, and the Devils may need to consider retaining some salary to facilitate a trade.

Although Hamilton, 32, remains a valuable second or third-pairing defenseman, his salary presents a hurdle. Last season, he tallied 12 goals and 27 assists for a total of 39 points over 77 games with New Jersey. During his time with the Bruins, he played 178 games, accumulating 22 goals and 61 assists for 83 points. Over his entire NHL career, he has participated in 912 games, netting 163 goals and 377 assists for 540 points.

As the offseason approaches, Hamilton's future remains uncertain, highlighting the complexities of salary cap management in the NHL.
