Dwyane Wade and Travis Diener Unite for Literacy and Marquette Basketball

Basketball icons Dwyane Wade and Travis Diener are set to launch the first-ever "Wade and Diener Home Court Weekend" this July, aimed at raising funds for literacy initiatives in the Milwaukee area and enhancing facilities for Marquette basketball. The two-day event will be held on July 16-17, with proceeds benefiting the Tragil Wade-Johnson Summer Reading Program, the Visit Milwaukee Foundation, and improvements to Marquette’s basketball resources.

Tickets are available for a trio of events during the weekend. In a recent conversation with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel following a girls’ basketball camp, Wade and Diener emphasized the significance of giving back to their community. Wade noted that the reading program is named after his sister, who instilled in him a deep appreciation for education. “We understand the importance of comprehension. We understand the importance of what reading does for you,” he shared, highlighting the challenges faced by children from underprivileged backgrounds.

The weekend's festivities begin on July 16 with "Court to Cork," where Wade and Diener will serve as celebrity bartenders at Central Standard Crafthouse & Kitchen, offering attendees a night of drinks and camaraderie. General admission is priced at $35, while VIP tickets are available for $95. The following day, July 17, features "Pages and Plates," an immersive dinner experience at Lupi and Iris, with tickets ranging from $275 for one to $1,000 for four. Prior to the dinner, a "Wade vs. Diener Weekend Elite Clinic" will take place, aimed at nurturing the basketball skills of local youth in grades three through eight.

Wade expressed that the initiative goes beyond just promoting literacy; it aims to empower students with a comprehensive understanding of the written word. “We want them to go off and have a successful life. We want them to be community leaders but also we want them to be able to sign contracts and do all the things they’re going to do in life,” Wade stated.

Both Wade and Diener are celebrated for their contributions to Marquette’s 2003 Final Four run. Wade later enjoyed a distinguished 16-year NBA career, winning three championships with the Miami Heat, while Diener played five seasons in the league with teams such as the Orlando Magic and the Indiana Pacers. The Tragil Wade-Johnson Summer Reading Program, initiated in 2015 through Wade’s World Foundation, aims to provide structured literacy instruction to students in the second to fourth grades.

“You’re always trying to improve ... nobody should ever think they know everything,” Diener remarked, underscoring the ongoing quest for growth in education, particularly for children eager to learn. The program pairs 12 tutors with groups of five students, ensuring personalized attention and support. “It’s a great opportunity for them as well to continue something that they have passion in,” Wade added, reflecting on the program's commitment to nurturing future educators.

This fundraising weekend also aims to support the maintenance of Marquette’s basketball facilities, a cause dear to both alumni since their playing days over two decades ago. “It feels good to help your program. The program that did so much more for Trav and I,” Wade concluded, expressing a desire for a lasting partnership with Marquette.
