NBA Analyst Criticizes Gregg Popovich for Impact on Victor Wembanyama's Reputation

Victor Wembanyama, center for the San Antonio Spurs, has found himself at the center of controversy following the Spurs’ defeat in the 2026 NBA Finals against the New York Knicks, which ended in a five-game series. While much of the blame has been directed at Wembanyama and his teammate De’Aaron Fox, one prominent sports commentator has shifted the focus to former Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich.

On a recent episode of his podcast "Fearless with Jason Whitlock," analyst Jason Whitlock expressed his frustration with Popovich, declaring, “I blame Gregg Popovich for what Victor Wembanyama has become.” He described Wembanyama's postseason performance as a series of "lowlights" that have dramatically altered how fans perceive him. Whitlock noted that Wembanyama began the season with high expectations, being heralded as a potential new face of the NBA, yet his behavior has led to a tarnished reputation.

Whitlock criticized Wembanyama as a player who has lost his competitive edge, labeling him as “dirty” and “petulant,” while attributing this transformation to Popovich’s influence. He remarked, “He’s a communist, like Gregg Popovich. Gregg Popovich turned this great basketball creation into [something] everybody now hates.” This harsh assessment comes after Wembanyama was seen walking off the court without acknowledging the Knicks players post-Game 5.

Popovich, who resigned as head coach in May 2025 after experiencing a mild stroke, is known for his outspoken views on social issues, including racial inequality. Whitlock argues that this leftist ideology has permeated Wembanyama’s outlook, particularly during the Finals when he garnered attention for his actions during the national anthem ceremonies.

As the Spurs look ahead, Wembanyama, now 22, will need to navigate the challenges of his public image and performance, especially as he prepares for the upcoming season. The basketball community will closely watch how he rebounds from this adversity.
