Lakers Face Potential Departures of Three Key Players This Offseason

The Los Angeles Lakers may be on the verge of significant roster changes this summer, with three essential players potentially opting out of their contracts. While LeBron James remains a focal point of the offseason narrative, the futures of Austin Reaves, Deandre Ayton, and Marcus Smart are equally critical for the team's direction.

Austin Reaves stands out as the most notable player in this situation, holding a player option worth under $15 million. Analysts like John Hollinger from The Athletic predict that Reaves is likely to decline this option, as he could easily secure a contract that more than doubles his current salary when he enters free agency. “It is inconceivable that he will opt in, as he will more than double his salary this summer in free agency,” Hollinger stated.

Deandre Ayton, who signed a cost-effective deal with the Lakers, also faces a decision regarding his player option, which would pay him $8 million in the 2026-27 season. Given that his performance has significantly outpaced his contract’s value, Hollinger notes, “He’ll be among the most gettable starting centers on the market.”

Marcus Smart, who signed a contract with the expectation of cashing in after a strong showing, is in a similar position. His player option is worth $5.4 million, but with his current valuation at $11.6 million, he is also poised to explore free agency. “He did play well and can confidently test the market,” Hollinger remarked.

Interestingly, while all three players could opt out, they still have the option to negotiate new deals with the Lakers under different terms. The prospect of their departures adds an intriguing layer to the Lakers' offseason strategy.
