Edwin Díaz's Recovery Progress Offers Hope for Dodgers
Los Angeles Dodgers closer Edwin Díaz has been sidelined for over a month following elbow surgery, but he is making significant strides toward a return. Díaz's elbow issues arose from the discovery of loose bodies after he faced challenges on the mound, leading to his decision for surgery. The Dodgers had invested $69 million in Díaz to secure his role as the team's primary closer, crucial for maintaining leads and bolstering the starting rotation during the playoffs.
After experiencing a rough patch early in the season, the Dodgers opted for surgery to address Díaz's elbow condition, with the aim of restoring his typical pitching velocity. Recovery from such a procedure generally takes two to three months, suggesting a potential comeback around the All-Star break.
Despite the lengthy recovery ahead, manager Dave Roberts provided a positive update on Díaz's progress. "I think Edwin is certainly ahead of Blake, obviously, and so he is playing catch," Roberts shared, noting that Díaz has successfully completed back-to-back pitching sessions. "He’s gone back-to-back a couple different times, stretching it out. So I would assume that once he stretches it out more, then there’ll be the flat ground, and then at some point in time, he’ll get on the mound. But he’s progressing really nicely, all positive with Edwin."
Díaz's situation parallels that of Dodgers starting pitcher Blake Snell, who also dealt with loose bodies in his elbow. Snell underwent surgery just two weeks ago but is already throwing again, thanks to a newer procedure that shortens his recovery timeline. Both players' experiences could provide valuable insights for the Dodgers as they navigate treatment options for similar injuries.
