Emma Clarke's Walk-Off Homer Lifts Tennessee Softball into WCWS Semifinals

OKLAHOMA CITY — Emma Clarke, an infielder for Tennessee softball, experienced an overwhelming wave of happiness as she stepped into the batter's box, focusing intently on Texas Tech pitcher Kaitlyn Terry during the bottom of the ninth inning. After taking a ball to start her at-bat, the sophomore seized the opportunity on the next pitch, launching the ball over the center field fence at Devon Park, clinching a thrilling 2-1 victory for Tennessee on May 30.

As she rounded the bases, Clarke raised her arms in celebration, drawing her teammates out of the dugout to greet her at home plate. She leaped onto the plate, only to be engulfed in joyous embraces. "Just so much joy. I had so many thoughts," Clarke expressed. "But I immediately just looked up and started to give God all the glory because I'm so grateful to be in this position, to be on this team with these people." She emphasized the significance of the moment, saying, "It's literally such a blessing. I just couldn't do it without the girls to my left and right."

This victory against No. 11 seed Texas Tech (58-8) propels the No. 7 seed Lady Vols (49-10) into the Women's College World Series semifinals, maintaining their presence in the winner's bracket for the first time since 2013. Clarke noted her intention to swing at any strikes to ignite a rally in the ninth inning. "I just wanted to put the ball in play any way I could, and it worked out," she remarked.

With 14 home runs this season, Clarke leads the team, and her latest homer marked her fourth of the NCAA Tournament and her first in the WCWS. Tennessee coach Karen Weekly praised her performance, stating, "She's just a beast," and added that when she fully commits to her swing, "good things tend to happen." Weekly also highlighted Clarke's infectious energy, describing her as the team's "hype person" and a major source of motivation.

The Lady Vols nearly secured a win in regulation, holding a 1-0 lead in the seventh inning until Texas Tech challenged a call at home plate, leading to a tied game after the challenge was upheld. Clarke's defensive skills were key throughout the match, as she made crucial plays, including a perfectly executed fielding to beat a runner at first base. Senior pitcher Karlyn Pickens praised Clarke's reliability, saying, "Emma Clarke, just like a ball magnet. Every ball hit her way, she's going to field, they're going to make a play."
