Emma Clarke's Walk-Off Homer Sends Tennessee Softball to WCWS Semifinals
OKLAHOMA CITY — In a thrilling moment for Tennessee softball, infielder Emma Clarke delivered a dramatic walk-off home run against Texas Tech in the bottom of the ninth inning, securing a 2-1 victory for the Lady Vols on May 30. With the bases clear, Clarke found her rhythm against pitcher Kaitlyn Terry after taking a ball, then connected powerfully on the next pitch, sending the ball soaring over the center field wall at Devon Park.
As she rounded the bases, Clarke joyously raised her arms in celebration, while her teammates rushed from the dugout to greet her at home plate. "Just so much joy. I had so many thoughts," she expressed after the game. "But I immediately just looked up and started to give God all the glory because I'm so grateful to be in this position, to be on this team with these people." Her home run was a pivotal moment, propelling the No. 7 seed Lady Vols (49-10) into the Women’s College World Series semifinals without a loss in the winner’s bracket for the first time since 2013.
Clarke, who leads her team with 14 home runs this season and has hit four during the NCAA Tournament, emphasized her focus on making contact during her final at-bat. "I just wanted to put the ball in play any way I could, and it worked out," she noted. Tennessee head coach Karen Weekly praised Clarke's performance, stating, "She's just a beast... When she gets after it and releases the barrel with everything, good things tend to happen." Weekly also highlighted Clarke's energetic role as a motivator for her teammates.
The Lady Vols had a chance to clinch the game in regulation, holding a 1-0 lead in the top of the seventh inning. However, a crucial play unfolded when Texas Tech challenged a home plate call, leading to the overturn of an out ruling, allowing Taylor Pannell to score and tie the game. Despite this setback, Tennessee's defense stood strong throughout the match, with Clarke contributing key plays, including a critical fielding effort in the fourth inning.
Senior pitcher Karlyn Pickens remarked on Clarke's defensive prowess, stating, "Emma Clarke, just like (a) ball magnet. Every ball hit her way, she's going to field, they're going to make a play." This confidence in their defense has been instrumental for the Lady Vols as they advance deeper into the tournament.
