ESPN Analyst Suggests Colts Should Trade Quarterback Anthony Richardson Before Season

As the 2026 NFL season approaches, an ESPN analyst has pinpointed a crucial move that the Indianapolis Colts should consider making. Aaron Schatz has recommended that the team trade quarterback Anthony Richardson, a decision that reflects shifting dynamics within the organization.

Richardson, who was selected as the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, no longer seems to align with the Colts' future strategy. This change follows the impressive performance of Daniel Jones last season, leading Richardson to request a trade earlier this offseason. Despite this request, no trade has taken place, and he currently finds himself competing with Riley Leonard for the backup quarterback position.

At just 24 years old, Schatz believes that trading Richardson could be beneficial for both parties. He noted, “It's clear that Richardson is no longer part of the Colts' plans and that they are much more likely to make 2025 sixth-round pick Riley Leonard their backup to Daniel Jones." He also highlighted that a team acquiring Richardson would have the opportunity to evaluate him for a season before he hits free agency in 2026. Although Richardson is set to receive a $4 million roster bonus in July, he could still attract interest from teams with veteran starters looking for a developmental quarterback.

During his time in Indianapolis, Richardson has passed for 2,400 yards and 11 touchdowns over three seasons. However, his progress was hindered last year when he suffered an orbital bone fracture, limiting him to just two appearances. While his trade request remains unfulfilled, the pressure to finalize a deal may intensify as training camp approaches, according to James Boyd of The Athletic.

Although Richardson possesses substantial talent, he still needs to demonstrate greater consistency. A trade could open new opportunities for him to thrive elsewhere, but for now, he will continue with the Colts as the team navigates its quarterback situation.
