Exploring the Quest for Europa League Away Tickets

Fans of Stade Rennais proudly showcased a banner declaring "Rennes goes to Europe" prior to their match against FC Nantes at Roazhon Park on April 26, 2026. The excitement surrounding the team's qualification for the Europa League has sparked interest in the possibility of attending matches abroad.

As the season draws to a close, thoughts of visiting legendary stadiums like Milan's San Siro or Marseille's Vélodrome dance in the minds of supporters. However, the dream of easily securing away tickets for these iconic venues may be more challenging than anticipated. After the team's qualification was confirmed on May 24, the belief that tickets would be plentiful for European fixtures was somewhat naive.

Currently, thirteen clubs have secured their places in the League Phase of the Europa League, with 23 additional spots yet to be filled. Among the confirmed clubs, only five boast stadiums that can hold over 40,000 fans: Real Sociedad (40,177), Juventus (41,500), Sunderland (49,000), Marseille (67,000), and AC Milan (75,800). UEFA regulations mandate that home teams must allocate at least 5% of their stadium’s capacity for away supporters, meaning the San Siro could offer only around 3,750 tickets to visiting fans.

Furthermore, all participating clubs must compete in venues classified as category 4 grounds, which must hold at least 8,000 spectators. This rule poses significant challenges for smaller clubs, such as Portuguese team Torreense, whose stadium only accommodates 2,400 fans, forcing them to play their home matches 190 miles away in Faro. While there have been concerns regarding the compliance of some clubs, such as Bournemouth, they maintain they possess the required UEFA license for hosting European games.

Another regulation offers some relief, as away tickets cannot exceed €35, aligning with similar rules in the Premier League. As Sunderland prepares for their foray into European competition, navigating financial constraints and squad management presents an ongoing challenge.

On a brighter note, Sunderland fans have a potentially easier away day ahead, with a pre-season friendly against RC Lens at Stade Bollaert-Delelis. This match, part of the Trophée 1906, commemorates Lens' founding year. The stadium, known for its English-style architecture, holds 38,200 spectators and promises an electric atmosphere thanks to the fervent Lens supporters. Although this fixture does not align with one fan's holiday plans in France, they hope to catch Stade Rennais before their visit to the Stadium of Light.
