Fabio Capello Reflects on 80 Years of Life and Career, Names Top Players
Fabio Capello is marking his 80th birthday today, reflecting on a remarkable career that has spanned over five decades in football. In a recent interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, he shared insights about the players who have left a lasting impression on him, highlighting both his favorite student and the most talented player he has coached.
Capello, who enjoyed a prestigious playing career as a four-time Scudetto winner with clubs like Roma, Juventus, and Milan, transitioned into management with significant success. He not only returned to the helm of those Italian giants but also took charge of Real Madrid, as well as the national teams of England and Russia.
When discussing the coaches who influenced him, Capello mentioned three figures who shaped his philosophy. He stated, “I tried to take something from all of their methods,” singling out Helenio Herrera as a major inspiration for his motivational skills. He fondly recalled winning his first trophy, the Coppa Italia, in 1969 under Herrera’s guidance.
Reflecting on his own playing days, Capello cherishes the “early days” and the thrill of winning his first trophies, including the prestigious Champions League title in 1994, which he described as particularly rewarding. Among the players he coached, he named Daniele De Rossi as his best student, noting, “I gave him his debut at Roma,” demonstrating the bond they formed during his time there.
As for the most gifted player he has worked with, Capello pointed to Ronaldo, calling him “an absolute champion,” although he lamented that Ronaldo was not willing to make further sacrifices during his time at Madrid. Capello also mentioned Antonio Cassano, praising his talent but admitting, “he made me too angry,” indicating the complexity of coaching such a gifted yet challenging player.
