Falcons Kick Off Minicamp with Promising Day 1 Highlights
The Atlanta Falcons have officially commenced their mandatory minicamp, with Day 1 showcasing the team's progress under the leadership of new head coach Kevin Stefanski. As the players took the field, Stefanski shared insights on several notable athletes, including James Pearce Jr. and Michael Penix Jr.
James Pearce Jr. made his first appearance at the practice facility since facing legal issues in the offseason. Stefanski announced that while Pearce will participate in individual workouts, he will not engage in team drills as he works to catch up after missing parts of the offseason program. “He’ll do work in the weight room,” Stefanski explained. “He’s not going to do team settings, team period type of stuff yet.”
Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is still in recovery and will refrain from participating in 11-on-11 drills. Despite this, he expressed eagerness to return fully to practice. “If it was up to me, I’d do everything. I’d do 11-on-11 now,” Penix stated after the session. Additionally, injuries have sidelined some rookies from the 2026 draft class, including fourth-round pick Kendal Daniels due to a foot injury and sixth-round pick Anterio Thompson, who is recovering from an undisclosed issue.
Throughout the day, Pearce was seen engaging in warmups, while Penix demonstrated his skills during 7-on-7 drills, notably connecting with veteran receiver Olamide Zaccheaus for a significant gain. As Penix competes for the starting role, he was also observed participating in passing drills alongside Tua Tagovailoa.
Defensive line coach Nate Ollie was actively coaching his players, emphasizing the need for continual improvement. The Falcons will continue their minicamp practices, returning to the field Wednesday morning. However, Thursday's schedule will not include any on-field activities for the players.
