Fans Express Anger Over World Cup's New Hydration Breaks

Fans are voicing their frustration over the implementation of two mandatory hydration breaks during every match of the World Cup, scheduled for the midway point of each half at 22 minutes and 67 minutes. Each break lasts for three minutes and has raised concerns as it also creates opportunities for broadcasters to air additional advertisements.

FIFA claims that the hydration breaks are intended to prioritize "health and wellbeing," aiming to provide optimal conditions for players based on lessons learned from previous tournaments. "The health and wellbeing of players and everyone involved remain a top priority," the organization stated, though many believe the true motive lies in generating advertising revenue.

During the tournament opener between Mexico and South Africa, the hydration breaks faced criticism, particularly when some broadcasters failed to resume play promptly due to extended commercial slots. The situation has sparked debates among fans who feel that the sport is becoming overly commercialized, especially since full-screen advertisements during live action are a departure from tradition.

Even coaches have expressed skepticism about the necessity of these breaks. USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino remarked, “I don’t like it. I only like it when the conditions are extreme, but when the conditions are good, it is unnecessary,” referencing the temperature during the game.

As the World Cup progresses, concerns about the commercialization of football continue to grow, with fans criticizing FIFA for prioritizing profit over the viewing experience. Many are calling for a reevaluation of these hydration breaks, suggesting that they disrupt the flow of the game and detract from the overall experience for spectators.
