Farah O’Keefe's Stellar Performance Secures US Victory Over GB&I in Curtis Cup
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Texas junior Farah O’Keefe made history at the Curtis Cup by becoming only the fourth player ever to achieve five victories in a single match, contributing significantly to the United States' 13-7 triumph over Great Britain and Ireland at the Bel-Air Country Club on Sunday. This victory further extends the American lead in the series, which began in 1932, to 32 wins, nine losses, and three ties.
After Kiara Romero secured the decisive point, O’Keefe completed her perfect run with a 2-and-1 win against Charlotte Naughton. She joined an elite group of players, including Stacy Lewis (2008), Kristin Gillman (2018), and Bronte Law (2016), who have also recorded a flawless 5-0-0 record in the tournament.
O’Keefe had recently been recognized as the low amateur at The Chevron Championship, the first major on the LPGA calendar, and also claimed the NCAA individual title last month at La Costa. Romero's match against Isla McDonald-O’Brien ended with a close 1-up victory, while Jasmine Koo and Asterisk Talley also contributed to the American scoreline with wins over Nellie Ong and Davina Xanh, respectively.
In the concluding matches, Anna Davis triumphed over Beth Coulter 4 and 3, and Kary Hollenbaugh edged out GB&I's Lily Hirst, winning 1 up. The initial two matches were won by Patience Rhodes and Sophia Fullbrook for Great Britain and Ireland, allowing them to briefly tie the score at seven.
Looking ahead, the next Curtis Cup will take place at Sunningdale in England in 2024, following a close contest where GB&I narrowly won 10 1/2 to 9 1/2 in 2022. Future events are scheduled for Royal Dornoch in Scotland in 2028 and the National Golf Links of America in Southampton, New York, in 2030.
