Finland and Switzerland Set for IIHF World Championship Final Showdown

Stockholm — Finland staged a thrilling comeback to defeat top-seeded Canada 4-2, securing their place in the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship final. They will face the host nation, Switzerland, who dominated Norway with a decisive 6-0 victory earlier in the day.

The match began with Finland taking an early lead just 3:30 into the first period. Patrik Puistola capitalized on a Canadian turnover, skillfully placing the puck into the top-right corner during a breakaway. However, Canada quickly responded, leveling the score through Robert Thomas, who scored off a deflected shot less than five minutes later. They then took a 2-1 lead with Dylan Holloway's goal before the end of the first period.

Undeterred, Finland surged back in the second period, starting with Aleksander Barkov's goal just 49 seconds in. Konsta Helenius and Aatu Raty followed suit, allowing Finland to establish a commanding 4-2 advantage. Although Canada pressed hard in the final period, Finnish goaltender Justus Annunen stood tall, ensuring Finland's progression to the gold medal match.

Finland, a four-time champion, aims for their first title since 2022, while Switzerland seeks their first championship after reaching the final for the third consecutive year.

In the earlier semifinal, Switzerland's home crowd witnessed a dominant performance against Norway. The match remained scoreless until Christoph Bertschy broke the deadlock late in the first period. Switzerland then netted three goals in the second period, courtesy of Denis Malgin, Ken Jager, and Damien Riat, as Norway struggled to keep pace. Nico Hischier added a power-play goal in the third, followed by Theo Rochette's final tally, sealing Norway’s fate.

Despite the defeat, Norway will have a chance to improve upon their best-ever fourth-place finish from 1951 when they face Finland in the bronze medal game. The final will take place at Zurich's Swiss Life Arena, marking Switzerland's sixth appearance in the championship match.
