Former NFL Player Questions Shedeur Sanders' Future as Browns' Quarterback
The Cleveland Browns find themselves in a challenging situation as they contemplate who will lead their offense this season. The choice seems to come down to Deshaun Watson, a veteran with a troubled history, or Shedeur Sanders, a quarterback entering his second year. The decision on who to name as the starter is generating significant debate.
On the podcast "Speakeasy," former NFL linebacker Emanuel Acho voiced his skepticism regarding Sanders’ potential, stating, “I am going to say something that only makes sense to you, Shedeur doesn’t [deserve] a fair shot, fifth round picks do not deserve a fair shot.” His comments were made while discussing the merits of starting Sanders with former wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh.
In response, Houshmandzadeh pointed out that there are exceptions, highlighting successful players from later rounds. Acho countered by citing examples like Kirk Cousins and Dak Prescott, who only became starters due to injuries to others. He emphasized that while circumstances can change a player's trajectory, the pressure remains on Sanders to perform regardless of his draft position.
Last season, Sanders had a mixed performance, starting seven games and achieving a record of 3-4. Notably, he secured wins against AFC North rivals Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers, showcasing his ability to compete against strong opponents. However, he also faced challenges, including a season grade of F and a ranking of 40th in PFSN’s QB Impact Metric.
Despite his struggles, including games where he threw more interceptions than touchdowns, some argue that the Browns' lack of a cohesive offensive line contributed to his difficulties. Nonetheless, Acho maintained that Sanders must rise above such obstacles, insisting, “He just has to go out there and ball.”
If Sanders is named the starter, he will be guided by new head coach Todd Monken, who previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, helping to shape the performance of MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson. With new wide receivers Denzel Boston and KC Concepcion joining the team, the upcoming season holds both challenges and opportunities for the 24-year-old quarterback.
