Former Washington Offensive Lineman Recognized as a Top Underrated Transfer

The Washington Huskies have experienced significant changes to their offensive line, including the departure of redshirt sophomore Paki Finau, who has now joined the BYU Cougars. Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 310 pounds, Finau, a former four-star recruit, has previously played in 16 games for Washington, alternating between left guard and right tackle. As BYU's coach Kalani Sitake looks to strengthen his offensive lineup, Finau is positioned to take over the starting left tackle role.

In a recent assessment by Bleacher Report's David Kenyon, Finau has been highlighted as one of the most underrated transfers in the nation as the 2026 season approaches. Senior offensive lineman Bruce Mitchell commented on Finau's impact, stating, “Those guys are going to be big pieces on this offensive line this year,” referring to Finau and two other new offensive line transfers during their spring practice.

Mitchell also noted the challenges faced by the team, saying, “We lost some key starters last year. Everybody is still fighting for a spot at this point. They’ve already been up in the film room, learning the offense. They are right on track to see some major playing time this year.”

Finau has been competing for the starting left guard position during spring and fall camps, contending with John Mills, who eventually earned a Freshman All-American title. While he contributed significantly last season by playing in 12 games and starting four, the return of Drew Azzopardi at right tackle and the arrival of new players like freshman Kodi Greene and Sam Houston State transfer Kolt Dieterich at left tackle would have made it difficult for Finau to secure a consistent starting role at Washington.

Originating from Oak Hills High School in California, Finau is among a couple of offensive line players who transferred from Washington this offseason in search of more playing time. Center Zach Henning, who started four games last year, has also made the move to Arizona in the Big 12.
