Four-Star Linebacker Elyjah Staples Chooses Cal, Shares Insights on His Decision

Elyjah Staples, a standout athlete from Marquez High School in Los Angeles, has officially committed to the University of California, Berkeley, expressing his enthusiasm for joining the Bears. Staples was one of the key recruits during a recent visit weekend, which is expected to lead to multiple commitment announcements in the days ahead. He made his decision public earlier this evening.

“I really wasn’t expecting to commit this soon,” Staples remarked. “I really expected to make it to my visit to BYU, but Cal is just too great an opportunity for me.” He revealed that the moment he made his choice occurred during dinner, describing it as a feeling that simply felt right. “I love everything about Cal, and it’s the best all-around fit for me.”

Just a week prior, Staples had narrowed his options to Cal and BYU, with the latter being a frontrunner at that time. “Cal really pushed hard, and then on this visit, it felt like home,” he explained, highlighting his admiration for defensive coach Tosh Lupoi. “I can’t wait to play for him.” Staples is optimistic about the direction of the Cal football program, noting, “You can tell Cal is building something special.” He also praised the campus and city of Berkeley, emphasizing its strong academic offerings.

On the football side, Staples expressed excitement about the defensive scheme and coaching staff at Cal. “Cal has a great defensive staff. Tosh is a defensive-minded head coach, and their whole defensive staff has a lot of great coaches with NFL experience,” he stated. “They see me as an outside linebacker who can play in space and rush the passer. I see a lot of opportunity there, and like I said, I’m just really excited to be a Bear.”

Ranked as a four-star prospect and positioned as the No. 353 player in the Rivals Industry Ranking, Staples is recognized for his versatility as an athlete. In addition to football, he has excelled in basketball, earning League Player of the Year honors in both sports during his sophomore year, and he also participates in volleyball and track.
