Rob Blake Joins Chris MacFarland in Nashville, Not Colorado
In a significant move for the Nashville Predators, the franchise has welcomed Chris MacFarland as its new President of Hockey Operations and General Manager. His appointment comes just days after he signed a lucrative six-year deal to lead the team's hockey operations.
On Friday, MacFarland made headlines once more by bringing Rob Blake on board as the Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations. Blake, a former defenseman for the Avalanche and a long-serving general manager for the Los Angeles Kings, adds considerable experience to the Predators' leadership team, despite his previous tenure yielding mixed results.
The recent changes reflect a strong commitment from new Predators owner Bill Haslam to revamp the organization. MacFarland's decision to wait until the Avalanche's season concluded to secure him as a candidate for GM of the Year marks a bold initial step in this process. According to TSN and The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun, MacFarland and Blake had previously discussed the potential for Blake to join Colorado's front office, possibly as soon as the 2026-27 season.
Interestingly, Blake was in Denver earlier this season for the celebration of the Avalanche's 2001 Stanley Cup championship team, where discussions may have taken place. Meanwhile, Joe Sakic remains in charge of the Avalanche's hockey operations and is expected to fulfill general manager responsibilities during the NHL Draft and free agency, as the team assesses its strategy for replacing MacFarland.
