Former Indian Cricketer Advocates for Shreyas Iyer as Next T20I Captain
Mohammad Kaif, a former Indian cricketer, has expressed his strong support for Shreyas Iyer as the most suitable choice for the T20I captaincy, should the team management decide to part ways with Suryakumar Yadav. With a series against Ireland and England on the horizon, Iyer is seen as the frontrunner for the leadership role, despite no official confirmation from the selectors.
In a recent discussion on his YouTube channel, Kaif emphasized Iyer's proven leadership skills, citing his successful partnerships with head coach Gautam Gambhir during the IPL 2024 season, where they led Kolkata Knight Riders to victory. He also noted Iyer's ability to navigate multiple franchises deep into playoff runs, enhancing his credentials as a captain.
Kaif remarked, “Gautam has worked before with Shreyas and won the trophy for KKR. Shreyas got Delhi and Punjab to the final. In terms of experience, Shreyas has led in the IPL, won the trophy and understands Gautam's pattern.” He further asserted that Iyer's experience and success as both a leader and a performer set him apart from other candidates.
Over the past two IPL seasons, Iyer's reputation has soared, having played a crucial role in KKR's championship win and later leading Punjab Kings to the IPL 2025 finale while consistently contributing with the bat. Kaif acknowledged the potential turmoil in replacing a World Cup-winning captain but argued that if a change is deemed necessary, Iyer is the most logical choice.
“When you are removing a World Cup-winning captain, there can be no bigger chaos than that. When all these calls have been taken, this is not a big call,” he stated. Additionally, Kaif praised Jasprit Bumrah as a top candidate for captaincy, provided he is fit and available, citing his experience and prior success with Mumbai Indians.
Kaif also mentioned that the management seems to be moving on from other potential candidates like Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill in the T20I captaincy discussions. “They have gone beyond Pandya. Gill will not come back, as he was tried and he also did not score, so they have gone past him too,” Kaif noted. As the conversation around India's T20I captaincy continues, Iyer’s prospects appear brighter than ever.
