Track Stars Shine at Section 1 State Qualifier Despite Heat
SUFFERN — On a scorching Friday that saw temperatures soar into the 90s, athletes from Section 1 showcased their talents during the final day of the State Track and Field Qualifier. The event not only highlighted individual achievements but also underscored Bronxville's continued supremacy in Class C, with an impressive 24 athletes qualifying across 15 events.
The competition was intense, filled with moments of triumph and disappointment, including disqualifications that marred some relay teams. However, the spotlight remained on those who are set to compete next weekend at Webster Schroeder High School for the state championships, scheduled for June 13 and 14.
Among the standout performers was Hen Hud sophomore Sophia Savatgy, who dominated the girls Class B sprints, securing victories in the 100, 200, and 400 meters before helping her team clinch first place in the girls 4x100 relay. Meanwhile, John Jay-Cross River's Sloan Wasserman faced a challenge in the girls Class B 4x800 relay, where she was overtaken by Tappan Zee's Bridget Dunn. Both teams will be heading to the state competition, with Wasserman also slated to compete in the 1,500 and 3,000 meters.
Connor Sullivan from Clarkstown South continued to impress in the shot put, recording a throw of 59-3 feet to win the boys Class A event. Sullivan, who is aiming for a 60-foot throw at states, expressed his determination, stating, “I’ve podiumed every time so far at states. Last year I finished runner-up for Class A, so hopefully this year it would be awesome to get that number one spot.”
Other notable qualifiers included New Rochelle’s Sophia Ochoa, who soared to a personal best of 39 feet, 11 inches in the triple jump, placing her seventh all-time among Section 1 girls. Ochoa expressed her goal to surpass 40 feet, marking it as a long-term ambition.
