Falcons' QB Competition Awaits Michael Penix's Medical Clearance
Michael Penix's status for the upcoming Falcons' minicamp remains uncertain as he continues to recover from an ACL injury. Head coach Kevin Stefanski is noncommittal about Penix's potential return, stating simply, "we’ll see." Until he receives medical clearance for full football activities, the team will not engage in a quarterback competition, according to quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt.
Van Pelt emphasized the challenges of assessing the quarterbacks when one of them is not participating at the same level. "It's tough to have a competition when both guys aren't competing at the same level right now," he noted, referencing the current situation. He commended Penix for his progress, particularly for managing to take 7-on-7 reps, but reiterated that a true competition cannot commence until both quarterbacks can be evaluated fairly.
Currently, Tua Tagovailoa is taking the majority of first-team snaps, while Penix is limited to individual drills and 7-on-7 sessions as he works through his recovery. After undergoing surgery on November 25 due to his knee injury sustained against the Panthers, Penix is gradually increasing his participation. Van Pelt pointed out that while Penix is getting more 7-on-7 reps than Tagovailoa, the distribution of team reps remains skewed in favor of Tagovailoa.
Penix was scheduled for a day off from practice on Monday, and Stefanski did not offer a specific timeline for when he might return to full activities. "He's hitting every milestone that he's supposed to hit," Stefanski commented, adding that the team remains in close contact with the medical staff regarding Penix's recovery. He emphasized the importance of not rushing the process, stating, "But not going to put any timeframes out there just yet, just going to focus on what's in front of us."
