France's Cherki Vows to Dominate at World Cup Despite Setback

As reigning champions and current World Cup runners-up, France heads into the upcoming tournament in Mexico, the United States, and Canada with high ambitions. Midfielder Rayan Cherki, who netted the only goal in Thursday's defeat to Ivory Coast, expressed confidence in the team’s capabilities under coach Didier Deschamps. "We’re not going to the World Cup as favorites, but to crush everyone," he declared in an interview with TF1.

Despite the disappointment of losing and ending a remarkable 364-day unbeaten streak, Cherki emphasized the importance of remaining focused. "Personally, it was a normal performance, just to get back into shape," he noted, adding that the squad has been diligently preparing at their training base in Clairefontaine. He acknowledged some fatigue but stressed the primary goal of being match-ready for their World Cup opener against Senegal on June 16.

Analyzing the friendly loss, Deschamps labeled it as "a warning" for the team, which has now lost its top position in the FIFA rankings. Cherki also highlighted his on-field chemistry with fellow player Michael Olise, stating, "We understand each other without even needing to talk," a testament to the unity and synergy within the squad.

Looking ahead, France is set to play Northern Ireland in another friendly on Monday, with expectations that key players such as William Saliba, Ousmane Dembélé, and Mathys Tel will make their return to the lineup.
