Franklin soccer's Mike Burgoyne resigns, ending 14-year run with Admirals
Mike Burgoyne's storied tenure with Franklin soccer has come to an end after the long time Admirals mentor resigned.
Burgoyne spent 14 years with the Admirals, first being hired as boys soccer coach in 2012 before stepping up to additionally lead the girls program in 2015. He resigned as Franklin girls soccer coach following the 2025 season, but remained with the boys through the 2026 campaign to see off his 12-man senior class.
Franklin's season came to a close as the Admirals lost to Bearden, 4-2, in the TSSAA Class AAA state semifinal at Richard Siegel Soccer Complex in Murfreesboro on May 20. Burgoyne had informed Franklin administration of his decision to step down ahead of the season, seeking more time with his wife and three kids.
"The wins have been great," Burgoyne said. "Competing in this district and this state have been great, but really, seeing kids grow, that's the part that when I reflect I'm going to miss most."
During Burgoyne's time atop the boys and girls programs Franklin became synonymous with TSSAA state tournament success.
He led Franklin boys soccer to consecutive state championships in 2013 and 2014, while pushing Franklin girls to state runner-up finishes in 2016 and 2022. He made 12 total TSSAA state tournament appearances with Franklin, seven with the boys and five with the girls.
Burgoyne, a Franklin alum, said it came as little surprise to his players when he announced this season would be his last at the team's banquet on May 3. The year prior he handed former assistant Kyle Roelke the reigns to the girls program and the expectation around the boys program was a similar announcement would come soon.
While Burgoyne ensured his departure would have little effect on playoff preparations, it inspired an outpouring of support from current and former players alike down the stretch of the Admirals' season.
"The reaction has been great," Burgoyne said. "I kind of feel like I'm a senior, that's how it's felt. I've heard back from lots of former players and former families that we've had ... It's been a lot of fun to hear back from those families and to reconnect.
"A few of them came to (a game) and we were able to talk after the game and reconnect and tell some old stories and give some hugs. It was special."
While Burgoyne has no role in the hiring process for his replacement, he hopes whoever the school decides upon to fill his shoes, looks to continue building upon the standards he helped set with Franklin soccer.
Seven of the boys program's nine state tournament appearances came under Burgoyne's leadership, while he also helped build on the legacy left by his predecessors with the girls' program, which has won 11 state titles.
"I want someone to come in that looks and sees what we've done and say, 'Hey, this is great, but how can I make this better?'" Burgoyne said. "And I hope that they do that."
