Barcelona midfielder Gavi recently opened up about his emotional journey leading to his inclusion in the Spain squad for the 2026 World Cup. The young player expressed his anxiety prior to the announcement made by coach Luis de la Fuente, as he was uncertain about his selection after recovering from a significant knee injury.
Having made his return to the pitch late in the season, Gavi successfully demonstrated his capabilities, earning a place in La Roja's lineup. His teammate Lamine Yamal captured the moment on social media, showcasing Gavi's ecstatic reaction upon hearing his name called for the tournament. “The truth is that I was quite nervous, I didn’t want to see the call-up,” Gavi shared. He continued, “Lamine told me to watch it with him there and we saw it together with the physios. When I heard my name, it was a rush of happiness. Representing Spain in the World Cup is one of the greatest things there is. Going to my second World Cup is a source of pride.”
The midfielder also recounted the difficult period following his knee surgery, where he learned that his recovery would take longer than anticipated. “After the operation, the doctor told me that I was going to be there for four or five months,” he said. “Even the doctor had to leave because I was going to explode.” Gavi recognized the challenges injuries pose in football, acknowledging that they can jeopardize a career. “I’ve always had that ambition in my head,” he noted. “I was clear that if I came back very well from the injury and gave the level I have given in the important games, I was sure that I would come.”
Recently, Gavi participated in a preparatory match against Iraq and is looking forward to taking the field again against Peru in the upcoming days.
