Georgia Secures 2-0 Victory Over Texas to Advance in College World Series

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — In a decisive performance, Georgia's pitching duo of Dylan Vigue and Justin Byrd limited Texas to just four hits, leading the Bulldogs to a 2-0 triumph on Tuesday night in the College World Series. With this victory, Georgia (53-13) eliminated Texas (46-15) from the tournament, having bested them twice within four days, and now moves on to face Oklahoma in the Bracket 2 final.

The Bulldogs will need to defeat the Sooners not just once, but twice on Wednesday and Thursday to secure a spot in the best-of-three championship series for the first time since 2008. Despite striking out 17 times and managing only five hits against Texas pitchers Luke Harrison and Sam Cozart, Georgia capitalized on their scoring opportunities, pushing across one run in both the fifth and seventh innings.

Vigue was particularly effective, yielding just two hits while recording eight strikeouts over four innings. Byrd then took the mound, allowing two hits and striking out four batters in the remaining innings. Throughout the two games against Texas, Georgia's pitching staff demonstrated remarkable dominance, limiting the Longhorns to a mere .133 batting average with no extra-base hits and racking up a total of 27 strikeouts.

Harrison, who had not started since May 29, performed well initially, setting a career high with 11 strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. The Bulldogs broke the scoreless tie in the fifth when Tre Phelps, who had struggled in the CWS, doubled to bring in Brennan Hudson for Georgia's first hit. They added another run in the seventh, benefiting from a series of successful challenges that overturned crucial calls in their favor.

Texas' final opportunity to score came in the eighth inning when Adrian Rodriguez, who had hit for the cycle against Alabama, grounded out with men on first and second and two outs. Georgia's shutout marked a historic day, as it coincided with West Virginia's 12-0 victory over Troy, making it the first time since 1973 that multiple teams recorded shutouts in a single day at the CWS.
