Georgia Pitching Shines as Bulldogs Defeat Texas in CWS Elimination Game
OMAHA, NE — The Georgia Bulldogs are still in contention for the College World Series title after a hard-fought 2-0 victory over the Texas Longhorns in an elimination game on Tuesday night at Charles Schwab Field. This win marks the third consecutive game in Omaha where Georgia has relied on strong starting pitching, a strategy that has proven effective for the Diamond Dawgs.
Georgia's pitching staff showcased their talent once again, with Dylan Vigue setting the tone by throwing four innings, allowing only two hits while striking out eight Texas batters. Justin Byrd then took the mound and continued the momentum, giving up just two hits and recording four strikeouts. Byrd's performance was crucial, especially as he navigated a tough situation in the eighth inning with two runners on base before closing out the game confidently in the ninth.
“My feet are actually on the ground now, but we were in their bookbags — all of the hitters were in the pitchers' bookbags. They were carrying us,” commented Tre Phelps, reflecting on the impressive showing of Georgia's pitchers throughout the tournament.
Offensively, the Bulldogs faced challenges against Texas starter Luke Harrison, who was compared to legendary pitcher Sandy Koufax by Georgia’s coach during the broadcast. The hitting struggles continued for Georgia, especially early on, as they struck out eight times in the first three innings. However, the breakthrough came in the fifth when Tre Phelps doubled in Brennan Hudson, who had walked to start the inning. An additional insurance run was added in the seventh when Ryan Black scored on a sacrifice fly after a successful challenge upheld the run at home plate.
With their bullpen remaining mostly intact and key reliever Matt Scott yet to see action, Georgia is poised for their next challenge against Oklahoma, needing to secure two wins to advance to the championship series. With the pitching depth still available, the Bulldogs are focused on maintaining their momentum. Go Dawgs!
