Giants Appoint Caleb Kilian as New Closer, Moving Away from Committee Strategy
SAN FRANCISCO — In a significant shift from their previous bullpen strategy, the San Francisco Giants have officially named Caleb Kilian as their new closer, as announced by rookie manager Tony Vitello before the team’s series opener against the Chicago Cubs. This decision marks a move away from the team’s earlier approach of utilizing multiple pitchers in the closing role.
“We talked to several of those guys about just getting more organized,” Vitello explained. “The bullpen’s all about chaos, but the more you can have a baseline, I think it brings out the best in the group.” This announcement coincides with the return of Ryan Walker, the last pitcher to hold the closer position, who has just been called up from the minors after a month-long stint.
Walker, who previously saved 30 games over the last three seasons, struggled last year and had not reclaimed his role during spring training. This season, he has converted three of six save opportunities, while Kilian trails him with four saves and a 3.34 ERA. Vitello acknowledged the challenges he faces managing a bullpen that has seen a 5.35 ERA since late April, ranking among the worst in the league.
As the Giants seek more structure, Walker will take on a new role as the team's "fireman," coming into critical situations before the final inning. “A big thing for Walk is being able to come in and be the fireman in particular situations that might pop up really anytime after the starter leaves the game,” Vitello noted.
Walker, who expressed his determination to return to high-stakes situations, stated, “Right now, I’m here to get my job done, whatever that job is. But my ultimate goal is definitely to get back into those high-leverage positions and eventually climb my way back into that closer role.” After addressing some mechanical issues during his time in the minors, Walker is optimistic about his performance moving forward.
