Golden Knights Triumph Over Hurricanes in Double Overtime, Seize 2-1 Series Lead
June 6 (UPI) -- A palpable sense of suspense enveloped T-Mobile Arena on Saturday as the Vegas Golden Knights edged the Carolina Hurricanes 5-4 in a thrilling double overtime finish during Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final. The Golden Knights, typically known for their offensive prowess, faced a tough challenge from the notoriously defensive Hurricanes, who managed to limit the home team to only two shots in an uneventful first period.
The game took a dramatic turn in the second period when forward Mitch Marner made history by scoring the fastest hat trick in Stanley Cup Final history, propelling the Golden Knights to a commanding 4-0 lead. However, the Hurricanes mounted an impressive comeback, scoring four times in the final period to equalize and force overtime.
In a twist of fate, the game concluded during the second overtime when a shot from Shea Theodore deflected off a wall and the pad of goalkeeper Brandon Bussi, ultimately finding its way into the net for the decisive goal. "We just let our foot off the gas," Theodore noted in a post-game interview with ABC. "I think we have to be sharper in the third, but I like the resiliency of the group."
This victory gives the Golden Knights a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-seven series, with Game 4 scheduled for Tuesday night at home. The Golden Knights dominated in physical play, recording 66 hits to the Hurricanes' 42, and outshot them 35 to 33 while also blocking 30 shots compared to the Hurricanes' 14.
Marner's historic performance included not only his three goals but also an assist, while teammates Tomas Hertl and Theodore contributed with a goal and an assist each. The Hurricanes, who seemed out of the game early on, found their rhythm late in the third period, with Jordan Martinook igniting the comeback, followed by goals from Taylor Hall, Jordan Staal, and Andrei Svechnikov, who tied the game with just over a minute remaining.
As the Golden Knights prepare to host the Hurricanes for Game 4 at 8 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, the stakes are high for both teams in this gripping Stanley Cup Final series.
