Grand Jury Dismisses Charges Against Ex-Flyers Player in Domestic Incident

A grand jury in Montgomery County has opted not to pursue charges against Roosevelt Chapman Jr., a former standout basketball player at the University of Dayton, who was accused of assaulting a woman on May 3 in Dayton. The 64-year-old Chapman previously faced allegations of abduction and misdemeanor assault in Dayton Municipal Court.

According to an affidavit related to the incident, Chapman approached a police officer around 11:22 p.m., following reports of suspicious activity in the area. Officers responded to the first block of South Main Street, where they encountered a man who claimed he had been involved in a vehicle accident near the intersection of Third Street and James H. McGee Boulevard.

The man informed the officers that his vehicle was disabled and requested assistance to return home. However, during the drive, he made comments that prompted the officers to investigate further after dropping him off. Upon locating his vehicle, officers discovered a blown-out tire and signs of dried blood inside.

The following day, police located the woman involved in the incident and noted that she had multiple injuries, including a swollen face and bruises on her torso. She recounted that during a ride home, Chapman abruptly turned the car around, leading her to grab the steering wheel, resulting in a crash that deflated the tire. Following this, she alleged that Chapman physically assaulted her, punching her repeatedly and dragging her from the vehicle before continuing the attack on the ground. A bystander intervened upon witnessing the assault.

The woman expressed her desire to leave, stating, "she only wanted to go home but Mr. Chapman did not want her to leave." Chapman, who stands at 6 feet 4 inches tall, is recognized as the all-time leading scorer for the Dayton Flyers men’s basketball team, amassing 2,233 points during his collegiate career from 1980 to 1984.
