Guerin Catholic Claims First Baseball Championship with Dominant Victory Over Andrean
The Guerin Catholic baseball team stepped onto Victory Field with a sense of quiet assurance, a reflection of their thorough preparation for this pivotal moment. Despite it being their inaugural appearance in a state championship game, the Golden Eagles were unfazed by the challenge presented by Andrean, which was pursuing a record-setting tenth state title.
From the outset, Guerin demonstrated they were ready to seize the moment, quickly establishing a three-run lead in the first inning. Senior pitcher Tate Troxell was exceptional on the mound, striking out 12 batters and allowing only a single run across six innings, guiding the Golden Eagles to a decisive 9-3 victory in the Class 3A state championship. This triumph will elevate Guerin to Class 4A for the next season, a change also prompted for Andrean after their recent performances.
"When we get that 3-0 lead it's real easy for me to get into autopilot and just cruise," Troxell remarked. He highlighted his strategy, noting, "Usually, I'm pretty breaking ball heavy. Today I was able to get ahead with my fastball." After a shaky start where Andrean's first two batters reached base, Troxell quickly regained control, striking out five of the following six hitters. His fastball consistently troubled Andrean, with six of his strikeouts coming without the batters swinging.
While Troxell was effective, Guerin's offense was relentless against the Andrean pitching staff. In preparation, the team focused on hitting left-handed breaking balls, utilizing their pitching machine and practice sessions with coaches and players who threw left-handed. This strategy proved successful as Andrean's pitchers struggled to contain the Golden Eagles, who capitalized on the opportunities presented to them.
The scoring began with a groundout by Karson Smith, followed by runs from Ben Canada and Grant Beard. Nolan Ratcliff’s three-run double in the fourth inning solidified Guerin’s dominance, allowing him to tie a state record with four RBIs in the game. Ratcliff expressed confidence in their ability, saying, "We hadn't scored much all postseason, but as soon as we saw that left come on the mound, we knew what he was throwing." The victory marked a significant moment for the Golden Eagles, who had worked diligently under the leadership of a senior class that had been together since their freshman year.
This state championship is a testament to the dedication and teamwork of Guerin Catholic's players, who have built a strong foundation for the program's future. "When you trust the person to the right and left of you like your brother, you're not going to lose," said Ian Taylor, reflecting on the bonds formed throughout the season.
