Haji Wright Reflects on Previous Success Against Australia as USMNT Prepares for Rematch
IRVINE, Calif. – Haji Wright, a key player for the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT), has fond memories from their last encounter with Australia. The 28-year-old striker was instrumental in the USMNT's 2-1 victory over the Socceroos on October 14, 2025, where he scored both goals that turned the tide of the match in Colorado, despite Australia being on a remarkable 12-match unbeaten streak at the time.
“It was difficult for us to break them down,” Wright recalled, analyzing the tactical discipline displayed by the Australian side. “We had to wait for our moments to find our chances and take our opportunities when they came.” The upcoming clash is set against a backdrop of heightened expectations, as both teams have already secured wins in their group stage openers at the FIFA World Cup.
As of now, both the U.S. and Australia lead Group D following their respective victories. The U.S. triumphed over Paraguay with a score of 4-1, while Australia delivered a strong performance against Türkiye, winning 2-0. This positions both teams as formidable contenders within the group, intensifying the anticipation for their forthcoming match.
Although he did not play in the first match, Wright brings valuable experience to the table, having previously participated in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. With his current form, having scored 18 goals for Coventry City in the EFL Championship, he is poised to make an impact should he be called upon against Australia.
The USMNT is focused on their upcoming challenge, with teammate Tyler Adams emphasizing the importance of staying grounded: “We can’t get too ahead of ourselves. It’s time to flip the page. Australia is an incredibly tough opponent.”
