Hampton Roads Celebrates Four State Championships on Championship Saturday

Championship Saturday proved to be a historic day for sports in Hampton Roads, as teams from Great Bridge, Grassfield, and Kellam clinched state titles, marking a successful conclusion to their seasons. The excitement was palpable as these athletes showcased their talent and determination on the field.

In the Class 5 baseball state championship, Great Bridge overcame an early setback to secure an 11-5 victory against Glen Allen, earning their first state title since 2011. After falling behind 4-0 in the second inning, the Wildcats staged a comeback, with Trey Burton's RBI single in the fourth inning giving them a 5-4 lead. Casey Cuddyer also made a significant impact, hitting an RBI triple and later a double, contributing to an impressive run of 11 unanswered points.

Grassfield's softball team also made headlines by defeating James Madison 9-6 in the Class 6 championship. After trailing 3-2, Emmerson Hatcher leveled the score with a solo home run in the fifth inning. Aubrey Mitchell then propelled the Grizzlies ahead with a crucial three-run homer, which helped secure their victory and the state title.

On the soccer field, Kellam's boys team triumphed in a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over Lightridge to claim the Class 5 title. After being down 2-1, Wheeler Howes scored a critical equalizer, allowing Kellam to regain momentum and ultimately secure the championship in extra time. Meanwhile, the Kellam girls team also achieved greatness, defeating Kempsville 3-0, capping off a perfect season and avenging last year's near-miss in the championship.

With four state championships returning to Hampton Roads, this Saturday stands out as a remarkable celebration of athletic achievement for Great Bridge, Grassfield, and Kellam. These victories not only highlight the skill of these teams but also their resilience and dedication throughout the season.
