Hanson and Avon Set for Quarterfinal Showdown in Class B Softball Tournament
ABERDEEN — A thrilling quarterfinal matchup is on the horizon as fourth-seeded Hanson faces off against fifth-seeded Avon in the Class B softball state tournament. The game is scheduled for noon on Thursday at the Players Softball Complex, marking a significant moment for both teams as they strive for a spot in the semifinals.
Despite not having played against each other during the regular season, both programs have had success against other competitors in the tournament. Hanson enters the contest with an overall record of 18-4 and has secured two victories against Class B qualifiers, while suffering losses to Castlewood and McCook Central/Montrose. Avon, with a record of 16-7, has also faced challenges, holding a 2-3 record against fellow tournament teams.
This year's appearance in the state tournament is a significant achievement for Hanson, as it marks their return since the 2022-23 season, which was the inaugural year for softball sanctioned by the South Dakota High School Activities Association. The Beavers made their way to the tournament by defeating Flandreau in the SoDak 16. Avon, meanwhile, is looking to build on last year's experience after overcoming Scotland/Menno in their SoDak 16 matchup.
Key players will be crucial in the upcoming clash. For Hanson, Jozlynn Tegethoff leads with a remarkable .629 batting average and 39 hits, while pitching standout Jacey Schoenrock has thrown all 113 innings this season. Avon counters with Rilyn Thury, who has a .600 batting average and 38 RBIs, and Kaydence Metzger, who has logged 97 innings on the mound.
The winner of this matchup will advance to face either top-seeded Castlewood or eighth-seeded Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy in the semifinals on Friday. With both teams eager to make their mark, fans can expect an intense and competitive showdown on Thursday.
