Henderson Defends Bellingham Amid Criticism Ahead of World Cup
Jordan Henderson, who has represented England in seven major tournaments, expressed his difficulty in interpreting the media narratives surrounding Jude Bellingham, asserting that the young midfielder could serve as a pivotal asset for the team during the World Cup. As England prepares for its opening match against Croatia on Wednesday at 21:00 BST, the decision between starting Bellingham or Morgan Rogers in the number 10 role has become a hot topic.
Recently, Bellingham has faced scrutiny regarding his performances for England, with the Real Madrid player suggesting he has been unfairly labeled as a "scapegoat" within the team. Speaking from England's training camp in Kansas City, Henderson praised the 22-year-old's potential impact in the tournament, recalling when he handed Bellingham his first cap six years ago. "What he has done so far at such a young age, I think everybody forgets how young he is, even me sometimes," Henderson remarked.
At 35, Henderson's inclusion in coach Thomas Tuchel's squad is largely attributed to his leadership qualities, and he maintains a strong rapport with Bellingham. "I honestly couldn't speak highly enough of him," Henderson stated, emphasizing Bellingham's significance as a teammate and his unique contributions to the squad. "He really gives us an X-factor in our team. He has had big moments in his career, he is a big game player," he added.
Despite being one of the younger players on the England roster, Bellingham brings considerable experience with 48 caps and participation in three major tournaments. Henderson noted that Bellingham's mentorship extends to younger teammates, highlighting his supportive nature during training and camp activities. "They all look up to him," he said, referring to Bellingham's role in welcoming new players and fostering team cohesion.
In light of the media coverage, Henderson urged that much of what is reported does not accurately reflect Bellingham's character and contributions. "For us, we know what he can do, and we all love him inside the camp," he affirmed, underscoring the unity within the team as they embark on their World Cup journey.
