Ilia Topuria Confident Ahead of Title Defense Against Justin Gaethje
On June 14, the UFC Freedom 250 event will take place at the White House, featuring a highly anticipated lightweight title unification clash. Champion Ilia Topuria is set to defend his title against interim champion Justin Gaethje in what promises to be an exciting matchup.
Entering the octagon with an undefeated record, Topuria expresses confidence in retaining his championship. Following Gaethje's recent bout against Paddy Pimblett, Topuria believes he has a significant advantage. "Listen, if you compare my skills to his skills, I just feel that I'm way better than him," Topuria shared in an interview with UFC on Paramount+. "I see almost zero possibilities for him, but that's my perception."
While Topuria acknowledges Gaethje's reputation and fighting style, he remains focused on his own strengths. "Every fighter is different. They bring different styles inside the octagon. I've never faced anyone like Justin. He's a legendary fighter," Topuria noted, adding that he enjoys watching Gaethje's entertaining fights. However, he insists that in their matchup, he sees no chance for Gaethje.
Topuria is ready for a lengthy contest but does not anticipate the fight reaching the later rounds. "I'm prepared... I have the stamina to go not for five rounds, but for five days," he stated. Despite his readiness for a prolonged fight, Topuria believes he will secure a victory in the first round: "I just want to make it look beautiful."
