Indiana All-Stars Bounce Back with Convincing Win Against Kentucky

INDIANAPOLIS — Just a day after suffering a heartbreaking loss to Kentucky, the Indiana All-Stars found their rhythm and claimed a decisive 90-71 victory at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. This win allowed Indiana to split the annual All-Star Series with their rivals from Kentucky.

The turning point came in the second quarter, where Indiana outscored Kentucky 25-9, establishing a commanding 46-24 lead by halftime. The team's resurgence was marked by the energy, defensive tenacity, and mutual trust that had been lacking in their previous game. “We just came out with a different type of intensity today,” remarked Indiana Miss Basketball Gracyn Gilliard. “Our focus on the defensive end really pushed us.”

Indiana's defense was pivotal, leading to 24 forced turnovers that translated into 28 points. They also dominated the boards, winning the rebounding battle 53-38. Laniah Wills, who will continue her basketball journey at Butler, emphasized the importance of starting strong. “The plan was to have a bunch of energy, start it off, throw the first punch, don’t let them get started,” she explained.

The All-Stars showcased a well-rounded offensive performance with four players scoring 13 or more points. Gilliard, Wills, and Brooklynn Renn each contributed 15 points, while Renn also notched a double-double with 11 rebounds. Vanessa Rosswurm added 13 points to the tally. “I think we really came together in the end,” said Renn, who is related to Purdue's Trey Kaufman-Renn. “Just knowing that we are the better team, trusting in each other and ultimately just not giving up on each other.”

Renn noted that their defensive strategy focused on limiting Kentucky's key players, including Ashlinn James, who is set to play for Indiana next season. “I think the lead that we gained early helped us a lot,” she added. “It's not about them, it's about us.”

This victory not only marked a significant win for Indiana but also fostered camaraderie among the state’s top seniors, many of whom had faced off against each other in high school. “I'm happy I got to do it with the girls that I've been playing with and playing against my whole life,” Wills expressed. For Gilliard, the week was about more than just the win. “It's been a really fun experience,” she said. “It's definitely an experience I'd recommend.”
